I was commissioned to create a robot illustration for a robot
themed baby's nursery. Since the clients left the illustration
composition up to me I felt it would be better to have an
illustration that would suit the child's room as they grew.
As a child I was fond of the book The Iron Giant by Ted Hughes.
The the baby's father also had fond memories of the book.
The author described the Giant's eyes as glowing blue with
happiness I used a reflective headlight to give his eyes a liquid
quality. I felt it might allow the giant's eyes to seem more
expressive. In this painting I paid specific attention to the
direction of the text on the various paper samples I used.
I wanted them to read more like brush strokes.
This image was created using:
phone book pages
colored tissue paper
colored copy paper
three part sound engineering spec sheet
brown craft paper
Ikea floor map
potato stamped butcher paper (provided by the father from his childhood)
